Ballin' on a Budget

Ballin' on a Budget

Hello My Budgeting Bride...

Planning a wedding can be stressful on your mind and even more stressful on your wallet. I'm going to tell you a few tricks to saving money for a wedding (or just in general). All of these tricks are things I do myself and they have really helped me since becoming an "adult".  Follow me to the land of pinched pennies.

Download Money Saving Apps:

I have recently downloaded a few money saving apps that I am now completely obsessed with. Ibotta, Checkout 51, and Shopkick are all apps that give you money back when you shop. Shopkick gives you money for just walking into your favorite stores without having to buy anything. You get your money back in the form of a gift card or in cash straight to your PayPal account. I've made about 50 dollars back after downloading the apps and I will keep taking whatever I can get.

Start a Savings Jar:

Find a jar. See the jar. Put money in the jar. Reap the rewards. Tommy and I have put a physical jar in our kitchen to promote us saving money for something special. Whenever you have change or cash in your wallet, purse, or in between your couch cushions, put it in the jar. Something about having the jar out all the time makes you think about your savings and it becomes super motivating. Last October we saved a thousand dollars for a trip to Vegas by doing this method and have started saving for our next trip in the same jar.

Create a Weekend Budget:

I know everybody's working for the weekend, but that doesn't mean you have to live like a Kardashian come Friday. Make a reasonable budget for yourself for the weekend. Include happy hours, drinks at the bars, seeing friends, or whatever other activities you do when thinking about the budget. Now stick to it. I know it sucks, but your bank account will thank you for it.

Bring Your Lunch to Work:

The average person spends over 55 bucks a week on their lunches at work? If you do the math that's almost $3,000 you can save in a year by bringing your lunch to work. Make extras at dinner or choose a cheaper option and eat a $3 lean cuisine. I promise you, you wont die from not eating Chipotle every single day.

Sell Some of Your Stuff:

I know this sounds tacky but this will make you the most money. We all have things laying around your house that you don't ever use. Tech goods are definitely your best bet. I got a new phone, so I sold my old iPhone 4 (yes I was living in the stone age) on Craigslist. I made $200 and a teenager left happy. You can even sell your old clothes at Platos Closet too. You wont get the full price of your clothing items, but you will be surprised at the chunk of change you can make from your junior year homecoming dress.

Go Dutch With Your Paycheck:

When it's possible, I try to split my paycheck in half and put the money into separate accounts. I try my hardest not to touch my savings account, while my checking account is a different story. When I have my entire paycheck in my checking account it gives me the false sense of being rich and I am more likely to spend. When I split up my check  I feel like I don't have as much money and in turn don't spend as much. It's a weird mind trick that I play on myself but it seems to work.

Stop Ordering Things Online:

Have you ever actually looked at the price of shipping? Me either. I am an admitted online shopping addict, and I know how badly you think you need all the items in your cart, but give it a second thought. I buy clothes online because I hate the mall and the florescent lighting of most fitting rooms. But a lot of the times I ship the things that don't fit me back costing an additional 15 bucks. Long story short, if you can find it at a store near you, skip the shipping cost.

Now go out and $ave Dat Money

Pantone Color of the Year

Pantone Color of the Year

Drum roll please....

Pantone's color of 2016 is not one color but two, Rose Quartz & Serenity. The Pantone color of the year not only predicts wedding and fashion trends, but creates a color snapshot of what is happening in the world around us. These gorgeous hues of pink and blue are perfect for this years wedding season. Here are some ways to incorporate these trending colors at your upcoming wedding.

Bouquet:

This is the easiest way to incorporate the Pantone colors into your wedding. Both of these colors are very organic and are easy to incorporate in bouquets. Keep it simple and use just the Serenity and Rose Quartz to make your bouquet stand out.

Bride:

No white required! It is possible to wear a color other than white and still feel like a bride. Take notes from this gorgeous bride and wear a Rose Quartz dress. You'll look like a blushing bride all day long. You can also use the colors in your wedding shoes. These strappy heels feature both colors with some extra sassy studs.

Groom:

Your groom will be singing the blues in the best way possible in this Serenity colored suit and tie. You could also throw in a vest under the suit jacket. This blue suit will make your groom stand out in a sea of black  penguin suits. But don't worry bride, your still the star.

Cake:

Because these colors are definitely good enough to eat! Add the Pantone colors to your cake or dessert table for an added pop. Macaroons (which I'm obsessed with this season) come in Rose Quartz and Serenity too.

Maids:

Your bridesmaids will be thrilled when you pick a dress in one of Pantone's color of the year. No more being washed out by bright reds, yellows, and blues. These dreamy colors look amazing on any skin tone.

Table:

This is a very easy way to show of the Pantone colors. Serenity and Rose Quartz are often seen in old china and vintage dishes. If you are planning on renting your dishware, go for this vintage feel. You can go with a large set or mix it up with random vintage dishware. I've had brides find vintage dishware at thrift stores and have ended up buying everything instead of renting to save money.  Check your local Goodwill or thrift store for some amazing finds.

Extras:

Because why not go a little overboard? It is your WEDDING after all! These added extras will have leave your guest in awe. Deck out your Rose Quartz get away car and add balloons on the back instead of the traditional streamers and cans. Have your florist create a flower wall that can be used either as a backdrop for the ceremony or backdrop for a photo booth.

Lighting Your Life...

Tuesday night was a perfect night for a party and an even more perfect night to celebrate Scott and his flourishing business. The wedding and event industry spent the night meeting new people, eating amazing food, and dancing in Scott's new warehouse space in Arvada, CO.  Scott has been a great friend since I started in the industry and it is so nice to see him doing so well in his new space. Here are a few photos from the event.

Killer Skulls:

Why do skulls have to be morbid? Skulls can be so beautiful when done the right way. I have a cow skull that I painted bright teal that I'll be using for a styled shoot this spring (Hey Kristen Pierson!). Make a skull beautiful by adorning it with flowers and greenery and place them around your ceremony or reception.

The Essential Honeymoon Bag:

I know at the end of the night you'll be so excited to ride off into the sunset with your new hubby but don't forget your honeymoon weekender bag. Show off your new monogram with your brand new last name embroidered on your bag. Drop a hint to your bridesmaids...this would make a perfect bridal shower gift.

Daring Nails:

Don't get me wrong I love a classic french manicure. But if you want to do something more fun, try out some nail art. These examples have a white or pink base that won't take away from your dress, but go as crazy as you want! How cute is this little pineapple set on my friend and NYC fashion blogger Renee Goodman? So random, yet so great! Check out her blog at The Rene(e)gade

Dancing Shoes:

Heels are not a requirement for a wedding day in my book! Save yourself the sore feet and slip on some flats for the big day.  There are so many beautiful options and bridal flat collections to choose from. Some of my favorite flats are Tieks. They are so comfortable, come in about a million colors, and fold in half to fit into your purse. They are perfect for your wedding day because their blue bottoms can be your something blue. Check out their wedding line here: Something Tiek Blue

Getting Tropical:

One of my favorite new wedding themes is the tropical or Hawaiian theme. Bright flowers and island vibes can help you draw inspiration for your wedding color palette. Incorporating palm leaves and fruit into your bouquets, tablescapes, and center pieces creates a natural and organic feel. Change it up with a non traditional theme and go tropical this wedding season.
